The recent announcement from Google Inc. at MWC summit conducted this week suggested that it might launch its own carrier services for better serving its customers. Adding on to the huge success of Android O.S, this decision from the search giant could well enable mobile subscribers to experience a better carrier service. This project is named as ‘Nova’ and will be operational by this year end.
According to Google senior VP Sundar Pichai the project will be incorporated into U.S market at first on a small scale basis. It will be an experimental initiative. Soon the company will be launching solar powered planes and high altitude balloon antennas to provide internet access worldwide.
The big deal
Earlier in 2007, Google has made an unsuccessful attempt to provide open network access to subscribers by bidding at FCC(Federal Communications Commission) auction. Google will be offering its cellular service in partnership with two well established carriers namely Sprint and T-Mobile. These two carriers have quite a good number of subscribers after AT&T network. The call and data plans will be sold by Google under the above carrier’s network and Google will use its own brand name.
Different from Google’s fibre optics
The new wireless network model will be different from the currently serving fibre optic layout for providing high speed internet access. Here, Google will not set up any network towers or infrastructure, rather it will be relying on Sprint and T-Mobile towers to provide the plans under Google’s banner ads. The fibre supported areas are presently limited in number which makes its reach small.
Will add to the competition
With Google entering into the wireless market, the stiffness in competition will rise as the U.S market at the time has some of the big network giants operating like AT&T, Verizon, US Cellular already offering wireless services. This would force Google to offer interesting rates and user engagement plans. With a large share of revenue from search itself, Google undoubtedly remains the largest online advertisement firm while its success as a carrier service provider is something to be watched for.
What’s in the timeshell
Google also plans to start its own payment service called Android Pay like iPhone’s Apple Pay which will offer a robust and secure payment facility and has more features that Google Wallet currently offered. Also, a service to provide internet access to remote areas will be launched by Google under the codename ‘Project Link’.
