Google Maps is actually a boon from Google. There used to be an option named Offline Areas in Google Maps. But with the recent update this option is replaced with Wi-Fi Only Option. So now when you open up the Settings Screen, you will see Wi-Fi only as second option there. This can be used wherever you can access Wi-Fi connectivity. Even after selecting this option, you will be showed a remainder that Google Maps will still utilize meager amount of data from your data pack.
By turning on Wi-Fi only Mode will obviously cut the usage of data from your data pack. If you still tap somewhere on the description will eventually unveil the screen that shows the offline areas. Till the time Wi-Fi Only mode is turned on, you can see a small bar on the top of your smartphone display showing the exact and current status.

Regarding this update certain conflicts have been reported. Some have reported that they experienced turn-off of their display when they tried this. This might be a single incident. Anyway the update comes handy especially when you are travelling. It updates you with recent transit delays and also shows you alternate routes to reach your destination without much delay.
