Softbank, telecom carrier from Japan, partnered with Sprint (US) (Owned by Softbank) revealed Aquos Crystal Smart phone made by Sharp. The phone will start shipping from this August 29 in Japan and expected to make its presence in the US market later.
Sharp is well-known for their TV and home appliances and most phones these days use the displays developed by Sharp. Now sharp makes its way into the global smartphone market with Aquos Crystal Smartphone. The display steels the spotlight in this this device as expected from Sharp. The phone has the thinnest bezel than any other smartphones available in the market now. The fourth side has to accommodate the front camera and speakers, which inevitably makes that side a bit thicker.
The specification doesn’t sound high end but it’s not so bad as well. The phone has a 5 inch 720p display with 1280X720 resolution and the processor is 1.2 GHz Quadcore Snapdragon 400 from Qualcomm. It has 8 GB of internal storage, there is room for expansion via microSD slot, and 1.5 GB of RAM. The device is powered by Android 4.4.2 Kitkat. It supports 4G LTE for Connectivity. The phone has both front and rear camera, the rear camera has an 8 MP sensor and 1.2 MP sensor for the front camera. The phone weighs at 140g and 10 mm thick. The device bundles with a Harman Kardon Onyx studio wireless speaker,Harman kardon also helped Sharp to design its sound processing technology in Aquos Crystal.
The design is the best part in the phone with no bezel around the screen along with thin rectangular body. This makes it easier to handle. It is expected from other OEM’s to try this bezel design as this will help increase the screen size without compromising the overall size of the device, which we hate in all the phones with display beyond 5 inch.
Sprint has announced a press meet today and we are expecting the launch of the Aquos Crystal in the US market at this event. The Softbank which is the parent company of Sprint, is expected to launch the phone soon after its introduction in the Japanese market via Sprint. However there are no words about the second model from Sharp, Aquos Crystal X, which is a high end device with 5.5 inch 1080p display, 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and a 13MP camera. Anyway the launch will mark the entry of another Asian Smartphone manufacturer to the global smartphone market after LG and Samsung.
